Plastic Soup - Invisible Matters
融聲創意攜手墨西哥跨域實驗室 dériveLAB 與創意空間 BEMA 展開國際合作,邀請長期關注藝術與科技的台灣和拉美藝術家,由自身創作出發,回應「環境感知」的主題。
藝術家歷經一年的交流,通過遠端協作方式,讓分散於不同城市的創作者們共同執行,於過程中以模組化元件來串連開源環境感測網絡,利用數位構築技術開發裝置原型,並於雙邊舉辦階段性的公眾活動—墨西哥 dériveLAB 發起 ⊛ PIP Ciudad Futuro 計畫,在城市中搭建具未來性的巨大環境監測結構;因地制宜的台灣裝置設計,則是一系列可於城市中移動的設備,仰賴作為操作者的觀眾以身體介入來反映周遭環境擾動,感測生活中可見/不可見的層次,以此模糊觀眾與創作者的界線,描繪出兩者協作的輪廓。
計畫輔以公民科學與藝術創作主題,將舉辦系列講座及發布線上專題,公開台灣與拉美藝術家跨學科與文化的討論過程,以促進不同領域間的對話與理解。本計劃創研成果,於2021年11月展開系列線上座談與工作坊活動,並於2021年12月4日到2022年1月9日在寶藏巖國際藝術村—邊境71號展覽呈現。
Zone Sound Creative has partnered together with the multidisciplinary laboratory dériveLAB and culture space BEMA from Mexico to form an international collaboration. Artists from Taiwan and Latin America with backgrounds exploring the connections between art and technology were invited to respond to the notion of “Environmental Sensory” by drawing from the perspective of their own individual art practices.
After a year of exchange, remote collaboration has allowed artists from different cities to execute this project in unison. Those taking part have utilised modular components to connect open source environmental sensor networks, develop prototypes of the installation using digital fabrication technology, and have held regular and staged public events both in Taiwan and Latin America.
In Mexico, dériveLAB launched the ⊛ PIP Ciudad Futuro project, building a huge futuristic environmental monitoring structure in the city; the installations in Taiwan have been developed to adapt to local conditions, offering a series of devices that can be moved around the city.
In addition, they are reliant on the physical intervention of the audience as the operator to provide a reflection of the disturbances to the surrounding environment – sensing the visible/invisible layers in our daily life, and to blur the boundary between the audience and the artists.
Selecting as its general theme the topic of civic science and art, the program plans to hold a forthcoming series of lectures and publish online features. An important aim here is to widen the process of interdisciplinary and cultural discussion between Taiwanese and Latin American artists and to promote dialogue and understanding between different fields. The findings of this project were presented at a series of online artists talks and workshops throughout November, 2021 and the exhibition on view from 4th December 2021 to 9th January 2022, at Frontier Gallery No. 71, Treasure Hill Artists Village (Taiwan).

dérive LAB 為墨西哥 2020 行動基金開啟了 PIP 計畫(墨西哥 2020 行動基金為 ICLEI 和 Google.org 所支持的地方氣候倡議行動)。 dérive LAB 致力探索、理解和啟發人們對城市生活的新方式和新思考,旨在該計畫中,視城市中的公共建築為緩解氣候變遷的機會,經由環境監測感測器進而產生開放數據。
該計畫作為一種策略,在城市某些區域舉辦工作坊、發行手冊和執行小組監測以獲得環境數據。這些數據將會提供給政府、市民和其他涉及減緩氣候變遷之決策者和行動者。
該倡議反思了城市發展的影響,期以幫助相關決策、制定公共策略和強化地方行動者的網絡,讓城市朝向低碳的未來邁進。
塑膠湯-環境資訊轉譯創研計畫與 PIP 共同合作,將環境感測網絡延伸至台灣,並運用 PIP 的感測方法論創建可被分析和對比的數據庫,讓人們對身處其中的行星現象和與之相關的數據,能有更多不同的感受方式。
PIP - Public Infrastructure Prototypes for a City of the Future is a project that seeks to assume public buildings as opportunities to mitigate climate change in cities, generating open data through environmental monitoring sensors.
Public Infrastructure Prototypes (PIP) for a City of the Future is a project developed by dérive LAB, a laboratory that explores, understands and inspires new ways of living and thinking about life in the city, for the Mexico 2020 Action Fund, an effort ICLEI and Google.org to support local climate action initiatives.
PIP Ciudad Futuro is a strategy that involves workshops, manuals and the implementation of monitoring teams in certain areas of the city to obtain environmental data that in the future will serve for the government, citizens and others involved to make clear decisions and specific actions to mitigate climate change.
It is an initiative that allows for reflection on the impacts of city development, to help in decision-making, generate public policies and strengthen a network of local actors to adapt cities to a low-carbon future.
Plastic soup / Invisible Matters is collaborating with PIP by expanding the environmental sensor network to Taiwan and using PIPs sensing methodology to create a repository of data that will be analyzed and contrasted in order to come up with other, affective ways of relating to planetary phenomena and data.

作品會對周遭的光環境產生反應,在陰暗的環境中亮起成為夜燈。當裝置接收到來自不同方向的光照時,感知到光源的區域則會隨之黯淡。
The work reacts to light levels in its environment by lighting up and dimming down. When the device senses lights from various directions, the area which receives light will be dimmed and vice versa.

作品是以類比方式持續記錄路面紋理的移動裝置。擺錘在移動中因外力擾動而於卷軸上留下的軌跡,是操作者、裝置與環境交互影響的結果。
The work is a portable device that continuously documents the texture of the ground in an analog way. Traces are left on a reel of paper by a pendulum whose movements are caused due to external disturbances. These disturbances are the results of the choreography between the operator, the device, and the environment.

作品為一個可回應氣流變化的漂浮裝置。其模組化的結構使其能依照天氣狀態調整尺度,並在不同風向與風速條件下開展為多樣形狀。此件由多個四面體建構而成。數個三角錐體形成了更大的四面體,當這些四面體不斷的重複,便形成分流。
細胞狀四面體風箏的靈感啟發於亞歷山大・格拉漢姆・貝爾在 20 世紀初早期飛行實驗中所研發的細胞結構。透過風箏作為天空藍度測定儀,《流》被設計成為一自動感應器。天空藍度測定儀是由亞歷山大·馮·洪保德和奧拉斯-貝內迪克特·德索敘爾所發明,一種用於測量天空藍度的設備,該設備用來提供與大氣現象有關的資訊。
The work is conceived as a floating device that responds to airflow. Its modular structure allows self-adjustment in scale and form according to weather conditions, wind speeds and direction. Flow is constructed out of tetrahedrons. Triangular pyramids form larger tetrahedrons that, when repeated, form a fractal.
These cellular tetrahedral kites are inspired by cell structures made by Alexander Graham Bell in the early days of aviation experimentation during the beginning of the 1900s. Flow acts as an autographic sensor by instrumentalizing a kite as a cyanometer, a device invented by Alexander Von Humboldt and Horace Bénédict de Saussure to measure the blueness of the sky, which provides information on atmospheric phenomena.

A cross-country collaboration between Zone Sound Creative and culture space BEMA in Mexico, this multinational project focuses on the invisible yet perceptible possibilities existing within the surrounding environment. In this workshop, the participating artists from Taiwan shared between themselves a range of theme-related case studies, personal findings encountered as part of the overall process, and details of their own experience as part of their previous practice.

Environmental Sensing Practice
本場次將由墨西哥藝術家 Chucho Ocampo Aguilar 介紹已於墨西哥進行的 PIP Ciudad Futuro 計畫,帶領學員透過環境感測器建立網絡、理解不可見的環境數據。學員將組裝可感知溫濕度、懸浮微粒等環境數值的「智慧公民模組(Smart Citizen Kit)」,並將其連網後顯示於開放資料平台上,與已設立在墨西哥的模組構成一個遠端網絡,並討論下一階段的應用可能性。
In this workshop, Mexican artist Chucho Ocampo introduced the PIP Ciudad Futuro project that had been conducted previously in Mexico. Ocampo also led participants to understand how we can use environmental sensors to build networks and comprehend invisible environmental data. The participants assembled the “Smart Citizen Kit”, a device capable of sensing environmental data, such as temperature and humidity or particulate matter. This information could then be connected to the internet and then displayed on an open data platform to form a remote network with the module that had already been established in Mexico. In the workshop, artists and participants also discussed the application possibilities that could be developed as part of the next stage.

Walking Interfaces: Sensing the Planetary
墨西哥藝術家 Chucho Ocampo、台灣藝術家紀柏豪和李紫彤將延續過往的田野調查經驗,引領現場參與者運用此次展出的可移動裝置漫步於寶藏巖中。在散步移動的同時,以身體性操作帶動裝置反映環境變動與紀錄數值,讓人與裝置及環境協作,成為一個具表演性質的環境感知裝置作品。(本工作將於展場空間與藝術家即時連線,由現場工作人員一同協助。)
Chucho Ocampo, Chi Po-Hao, and Lee Tzu-Tung utilized their past field research by instructing fellow participants on how to use the movable installations on display while walking around Treasure Hill. As the participants moved through their surroundings, the device was driven by its physical operation to reflect changes in the environment and record data. The work represents a kind of collaboration between people, devices and the environment, becoming a performative environmental sensory installation.

Online Artists Talks
本座談由參與藝術家Chucho Ocampo(墨西哥)、Nancy Dayanne Valladares (宏都拉斯)以及Luíza Bastos Lages(巴西)的創作脈絡展開,暢談他們如何以判性植物研究、生態建築、殖民研究等面向,多角度地進行環境感測,並將環境生態議題詩意地表達於作品中。接著由藝術家紀柏豪(台灣)、徐叡平(台灣)、李紫彤(台灣)、Chucho Ocampo(墨西哥)分享塑膠湯-環境資訊轉譯創研計畫的發想設計過程。藝術家們如何以數據連繫藝術與環境感測之關係。
The Artists Talk begins by looking at the art practice contexts of participating artists Chucho Ocampo (Mexico), Nancy Dayanne Valladares (Honduras), and Luíza Bastos Lages (Brazil), and discussing how they approach environmental sensing from multiple perspectives through critical plant studies, arcology, and colonial studies, amongst other topics. Additionally, they will be talking about how they poetically express environmental and ecological issues in their works. Next, artists Po-Hao Chi (Taiwan), Rae Yuping Hsu (Taiwan), Tzu-Tung Lee (Taiwan), and Chucho Ocampo (Mexico) will share the conceptual design process of the project Plastic Soup - Invisible Matters. They will explain how the artists will use data to build connections between art and environmental sensing.
